Google’s exploreCSR Initiative Empowers Female Undergraduates in Northeast Nigeria with Computing, DEI Training

Google’s exploreCSR initiative has successfully concluded a three-day intensive training program for female undergraduate students in computer science and information technology from Adamawa State University (ADSU), Modibo Adama University, and Adamawa State Polytechnic.

The workshop, organized by Google Search CR4Q, aimed to equip young women with advanced computing skills while fostering inclusivity and gender equality in STEM education.

The training, titled “Empowering Marginalized Female Students in Computing: An Inclusive Curriculum and Research Mentorship Initiative for Northeast Nigeria,” focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to encourage female participation in academics and the tech industry.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Professor Adeyemi Abel Ajibesin, Principal Investigator of Google Research (exploreCSR) from the Department of Software Engineering, American University of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the initiative.

He noted that women in computing, especially in Northeast Nigeria, face significant marginalization and stressed that the training had transformed participants’ perspectives over the past three days.

Adamawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Neido Geoffrey Kufulto, commended Google Research for championing the initiative, noting that it comes at a crucial time to address the longstanding gender gap in the profession. She encouraged the female students to seize the opportunity and excel in their careers.

KiJennifer Tosin Komolafe, CEO of Luzura Dynasty and a practicing chartered accountant, also addressed the participants, urging them to remain focused on their careers and maximize the opportunities available to them.

She highlighted the importance of mentorship, encouraging the students to seek guidance from experienced professionals to achieve their goals.

The training culminated in an awards ceremony, where outstanding women in the tech profession were recognized. Certificates were also presented to all participants, acknowledging their commitment and participation in the program.

Expressing their gratitude, the students applauded Google Research for its efforts in promoting gender equality and digital empowerment in marginalized communities. They described the initiative as life-changing and a significant step toward closing the gender gap in technology.
