Adamawa NUJ Council holds Congress, issued key resolutions

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, have reaffirmed the importance of adherence to the NUJ Constitution, emphasizing that it remains binding on all members.
In a move to consolidate unity within the Union, the Congress recognized the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel under Ibrahim Kado, who, alongside Secretary Nuhu Anselm Kyauta, was officially inducted into the State Executive Council.
In a related development, the Congress formally presented Kate Aliyuda as an Ex-Officio member of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) at the national level and congratulated her on the achievement.
The union who made its position known in a communique issued out shortly Congress meeting held on weekend at the NUJ Press Centre in Yola, addressed the ongoing quagmire within the Correspondents’ Chapel following Kado’s election.
Citing Article 7, Section 3(d) of the NUJ Constitution, the Congress declared Phineas Padio no longer a member of the Union, stating that his medium, Sahara Reporters, is not unionized.
Presided over by the council chairman, the communique which was jointly signed by Austin Ajayi – Chairman, Wuyasim Akila – Secretary, and Samuel Gangwaja – Member, cautioned members against associating with Padio, whose name has been placed on the Union’s blacklist.
A 7-man committee was also observed to have been set up to retrieve all Union property in his possession, with a one-week deadline to complete the task.
On the forthcoming State NUJ elections, a three-member Electoral Committee was nominated. The committee, comprising Gloria Abutu, Yunusa Abdullahi, and Isa Tukur, who will be sworn in next Wednesday.
The Congress also expressed concern over the poor attendance of some members at Union meetings and called for a renewed sense of commitment to strengthen the Union’s operations.
Delegates commended the leadership of Comrade Ishaka Donald Dedan for his six years of dedicated service, citing his resilience and effective guidance.
On state affairs, the Congress lauded the Adamawa State Government for its infrastructural and health sector strides, notably the provision of free dialysis services. It urged the government to take proactive steps to address heat-related illnesses, especially during the hot season.
The Congress further appealed to the state government to ensure timely distribution of farming inputs ahead of the planting season and to intensify awareness campaigns on the risk of flooding.
Additionally, it raised concerns over the activities of illegal miners, particularly in Toungo Local Government Area, calling for immediate government intervention to safeguard the state’s solid mineral resources.
The Congress pledged its unwavering commitment to the principles of the NUJ and unity among its members, urging full compliance with the resolutions for the collective progress of the Union.
