Police Deny Allegations of Torture in Zamfara Murder Case Investigation

The Adamawa State Police Command has strongly denied allegations circulating in a viral video that suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Thomas Godwin, popularly known as “Zamfara,” were tortured, starved, and coerced into making false confessions.
The video, which surfaced on social media, features one of the suspects, Umar Ibrahim, also known as Sarkin Pawa of Kala’a, claiming that he and others were mistreated during the course of the investigation.
In response, the police issued a statement clarifying that nine suspects were arrested following a preliminary investigation into Zamfara’s murder.
According to the statement, the case was subsequently transferred to the Force Intelligence Rapid Response Team (IRRT) in Abuja for further investigation.
The police emphasized that all confessional statements were obtained in the presence of the State Legal Aid Council and were video recorded to ensure transparency and accountability.
“The Command categorically refutes these allegations. At no point were the rights of any suspect violated,” said Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, Police Public Relations Officer for Adamawa State. “All arrests, interviews, and procedures were conducted in accordance with international best practices and standard investigative procedures.”
The police also described the video as a calculated attempt to mislead the public and undermine the integrity of the investigation. While reaffirming respect for freedom of expression, the Command urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation that could jeopardize the investigation.
