NAWOJ,NOA,NGO Partner to Sensitize Adamawa Stakeholders on Flood Prevention, Climate Safety is
In a coordinated effort to tackle the growing threats of flooding and climate change, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Adamawa State Chapter, in partnership with ADSEMA,the National Orientation Agency (NOA) and Plan International, has launched a grassroots sensitization campaign in Ribadu Ward, Fufore Local Government Area.
The event, which brought together traditional leaders, farmers, and community stakeholders, aimed to educate residents on practical flood prevention strategies and promote climate resilience within the local population.
Speaking at the gathering, NAWOJ Chairperson, Rose Elishama Anthony, emphasized the importance of taking proactive steps to avert flood-related disasters.
She described flooding as a natural phenomenon that can be mitigated through early action, stressing that “floods bring disease and destruction, but through education and community involvement, we can reduce the risk.”
Representing the National Orientation Agency, Ehima Clifford, Procurement Officer standing in for the Environmental Change Desk commended the community leaders for embracing the sensitization initiative.
She urged them to take the message further into their communities, particularly those in flood-prone areas, and encourage safe practices to protect lives and property.
Nelson Dedin, a Climate Network Champion from Adamawa, highlighted the dangers of indiscriminate tree felling, pointing out its role in accelerating environmental degradation.
“If you cut down a tree, you must plant another,” he advised. He also called on residents to clear drainage systems and stop dumping refuse in water channels.
On behalf of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Chapter, Treasurer Joy Diamond representing Chairman Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi encouraged citizens to collaborate with journalists by sharing vital information that can help amplify their concerns. She also cautioned against traveling in boats without life jackets, emphasizing safety to prevent loss of life.
The Vice Chairman of Fufore LGA, who represented Chairperson Hon. Peace Samson Audu, applauded NAWOJ for the awareness campaign, describing it as timely and impactful.
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his swift intervention in the recent flood crisis in Yola South LGA.
The campaign concluded with a renewed call on residents to plant more trees and preserve the environment, recognizing the shared responsibility in combating the effects of climate change and ensuring the safety of communities across Adamawa State.
