NEDC to Launch Electric Vehicles, Health Insurance Scheme in Adamawa

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has unveiled plans to introduce electric vehicles and a health insurance scheme in Adamawa State, as part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and transportation in the region.
The announcement was made by the NEDC’s Adamawa State Coordinator, Barrister Khalifa Muhammad Lawan, during an interactive session with stakeholders in Yola on Wednesday.
According to Barrister Lawan, the initiatives are aligned with the Commission’s mandate to restore livelihoods, rebuild communities, and drive infrastructure expansion across the North East.
He emphasized that the deployment of electric buses, taxis, and tricycles will significantly alleviate transportation challenges in the state.
“We are bringing in e-buses for intra-state movement, electric taxis that can carry three passengers, and solar-powered tricycles modified to accommodate up to eight passengers,” Lawan said, noting that the transport project has received approval from President Bola Tinubu.
He added that the Commission would engage with transport unions and relevant stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), to ensure a smooth rollout of the new transportation model.
In addition to transportation, Lawan announced that a Health Insurance Scheme will soon be introduced to provide free healthcare services to vulnerable communities, particularly at the grassroots level.
“The goal is to make sure every household and community in Adamawa benefits from these interventions,” he stated, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to inclusive, people-focused development.
