NUJ Express Deep Shock Over The Tragic Death Somtochukwu Maduagwu

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29.
Maduagwu, affectionately known as “Sommie,” was just 29 years old. In addition to her work in journalism, she was also a trained lawyer.
The NUJ described her as a “brilliant, passionate, and dedicated professional” who brought “intellect, warmth, and integrity” to her work. Her death, the union said, is a devastating loss not only to her family and colleagues but to the journalism profession and the nation as a whole.
In a statement signed by NUJ National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union condemned the “heinous act” and called on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation. The NUJ urged authorities to swiftly apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice.
“Nigerians deserve to live and work in safety, and government must prioritise the security of lives and property as a matter of urgent responsibility,” the statement read.
The union extended heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family, friends, and colleagues at ARISE News, praying for strength to bear the loss and for her soul to rest in peace.
