Defence Headquarters Trains Over 80 Veterans on Skills Acquisition in North-East

The Defence Headquarters has commenced the training of more than 80 military veterans from the North-East geopolitical zone in a skills acquisition and empowerment programme aimed at enhancing their livelihoods after active service.
Organised by the Veterans Affairs Division of the Defence Headquarters, the programme is themed “Empowering Veterans Through Skills Acquisition for Capacity Building and Sustainability.” According to the organisers, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a professional, people-centric Armed Forces capable of meeting its constitutional responsibilities within a joint operational environment.
The training, held at the Officers’ Mess of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Yola, is designed to equip retired personnel with practical knowledge and improved economic prospects as they transition to civilian life.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Brigadier General Caius Baushe, Deputy Director, Veterans Affairs Division, who represented the Director, Major General Oluwafemi Williams, said the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General O.O. Oluyede, has prioritised the welfare of both serving and retired personnel. He explained that the training was introduced to empower veterans who have diligently served the nation.
He urged participants to approach the programme with commitment and open-mindedness, noting that the facilitators are well-equipped to deliver practical and result-oriented sessions.
Representing the CDS, Major General Williams said the initiative was developed to provide veterans with relevant education and hands-on training to support a meaningful post-service life. The training covers vocational skills, poultry, fishing, snail farming, animal husbandry, livestock management, modern farming techniques, financial literacy, record keeping, discipline, and marketing strategies.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State, represented by his Chief of Staff, Amos Edgar, commended the Defence Headquarters for the initiative, noting that it would significantly improve the economic well-being of veterans in the region.
Professor Augustine Dauri of Modibbo Adama University, a specialist in Agricultural Extension, described the training as timely and impactful, emphasising that agriculture remains a critical sector where veterans can excel due to their discipline and resilience.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Defence Headquarters for the opportunity. Sgt. Sule Gagaye (rtd) from Bauchi State, who retired in 2006, said the programme was long overdue. “I am retired but not tired,” he remarked, adding that he hopes to be fully equipped with new skills by the end of the training.
The training continues with practical sessions tailored to prepare participants for sustainable economic engagement after military service.
