NUJ Adamawa Warns Politicians Over Unregulated Media Engagements

By Ojoma Yusuf,Yola

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Adamawa State Council, has cautioned politicians and political actors in the state to properly engage with the union on all media-related activities, stressing that failure to do so could result in the spread of misinformation.

In a press release issued by the councilโ€™s leadership, the union stated that it would not accept responsibility for any misrepresentation arising from political events where it was neither informed nor consulted. The NUJ specifically raised concerns about press conferences organized outside its secretariat without its knowledge.

According to the statement, while politicians have the right to invite journalists to cover their activities, the union cannot be held liable for inaccurate or misleading reports that may emerge from such engagements. It added that the warning has become necessary due to the growing trend of individuals posing as journalists at political events.

The council reiterated its commitment to upholding professional ethics and standards in journalism, emphasizing the importance of balanced and credible reporting as outlined in its constitution.

The NUJ Adamawa State Council also reaffirmed its role in safeguarding the integrity of the media and maintaining its position as a watchdog of society.

The statement was signed by the Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim, and the Secretary, Comrade Kissinger Bukar.
