NUJ Chairmanship Candidate Fidelis Jockthan Flags Off Campaign, Hails Information Officers as Union Pioneers

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Chairmanship hopeful, Fidelis Jockthan, has officially kicked off his campaign at the Ministry of Information in Yola, where he paid glowing tribute to information officers, describing them as “founding fathers” of the Union.
Jockthan, a seasoned broadcaster with the FRCN Fombina FM Chapel, said information officers have historically played a pivotal role in shaping the NUJ and must be recognized and supported for their continued contributions to journalism in Nigeria.
“I hold information officers in high esteem. They are among the founding fathers of the NUJ,” Jockthan said during his address. “If elected, I will push for governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri to sign the Media Bill into law to improve working conditions for media professionals in Adamawa State.”
The campaign launch drew a strong crowd and a rousing reception. Jockthan was accompanied by his campaign team, including Director General Mohammed Saidu, former NUJ Chairman Comrade Salisu Abubakar, veteran journalist Umar Mohammed Gojos, NAWOJ National Ex-Officio Kate Alyuda, Jamila Abubakar of Radio Nigeria Fombina FM, and Chapel Chairman Sakina Ahmed.
He also emphasized the need for mentorship, training, and retraining within the media sector as veteran journalists retire, leaving behind a gap in institutional knowledge.
His proposed initiatives include a facelift of the NUJ Secretariat, the establishment of a revolving fund for member empowerment, and the creation of a “League of Veterans” to mentor upcoming journalists.
In response, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mr. Solomon Kumangar, lauded Jockthan’s vision, describing NUJ as a breeding ground for national leadership.
He cited examples of Nigerian governors who began their careers in journalism and expressed the ministry’s readiness to support initiatives that align with the state government’s development agenda.
Director of Information Pryan Luba and Chapel Chairman Innocent Zira echoed their support, commending the campaign’s policy proposals and pledging collaboration to advance the Union’s objectives.
Earlier in the program, FRCN Fombina Chapel Chairperson Sakina Ahmed described Jockthan as a “formidable candidate” with a proven record of leadership, urging members to rally behind him for the professional advancement of the NUJ in Adamawa State.
