MAUTH Records, Celebrates Successful Sixth Conjoined Twins Separation

The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH) has successfully separated and discharged a set of conjoined twins, marking its sixth such operation and reinforcing its growing reputation as a centre for advanced healthcare in Nigeria.
The Chief Medical Director, Bakari Adamu Girei, described the achievement as a testament to the hospital’s steady transformation into one of the country’s leading medical institutions, citing improvements in both infrastructure and human capacity.
According to him, MAUTH, which began with a modest 100-bed capacity, has expanded to over 800 beds, supported by modern facilities and a team of highly trained professionals capable of handling complex surgical procedures.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the milestone, former CMD and current political office holder, Ali Danburam, recalled that the hospital first undertook the delicate procedure of separating conjoined twins in 2013 during his tenure.
Danburam paid tribute to the lead surgeon, Auwal Abubakar, describing him as “a man who did not flinch where others feared,” and commended his dedication and courage in handling such high-risk operations.
Providing details of the latest procedure, Abubakar explained that the twins, Hassan and Husain, were born conjoined, sharing a breastbone, liver, and surrounding tissues. They were brought to the hospital just four days after birth under challenging circumstances, following the death of their mother shortly after delivery.
The hospital assumed full responsibility for their care, providing treatment free of charge for six months to stabilise them ahead of surgery.
The separation procedure lasted approximately 17 hours—shorter than previous operations due to the team’s growing experience.
“Each case of conjoined twins presents unique challenges,” Abubakar said. “However, with repeated experience, we have refined our approach, reducing surgical time and improving outcomes.”
Family members described the outcome as miraculous. The twins’ grandfather, Mallam Jibril Adamu, from Yelwa village in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, expressed gratitude to the hospital, its staff, and the government for their support.
He recounted that the family arrived in Yola with limited resources, relying on community contributions to fund their journey.
“We came here believing God would help us through the doctors,” he said. “Today, I am returning home with joy. My grandchildren are alive, separated, and healthy.”
He also praised the hospital for providing not only the complex surgery at no cost but also continuous care and compassion throughout their stay.
Medical observers say MAUTH’s growing track record in handling rare and high-risk procedures is positioning it as a beacon of hope, not only for Adamawa State but for patients across Nigeria and beyond.
