Adamawa Police Arrest University Student for Alleged Sextortion, Cyberstalking

A 24-year-old student of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, has been arrested by the Adamawa State Police Command for allegedly committing a string of cybercrimes, including impersonation, sextortion, and cyberstalking.
The suspect, identified as Paul John, a final-year (500-level) student and resident of Jiddel in Michika Local Government Area, was taken into custody after an investigation revealed he had created multiple fake social media accounts using the photos of unsuspecting women without their permission.
According to police, the fraudulent accounts were operated under names such as Rose YarLele, Procious Favourite, Wange Precious, and Joy Dennis. The suspect is accused of posting the victims’ photos with explicit and defamatory captions like “sexy lesbian” and “I am lesbian,” in an apparent effort to shame and exploit them.
Further investigations revealed that John used these fake identities to deceive some of his victims into sending him nude images, which he later used as tools for blackmail. He allegedly demanded money and sexual favors, and in some cases, promoted the women as “hookup” partners online — severely damaging their reputations.
“These actions inflicted serious emotional, financial, and psychological harm on several victims,” the police said in an official statement.
The arrest followed credible intelligence gathered by operatives of the Commissioner of Police’s Monitoring Unit. The suspect is currently in custody while further investigations continue.
Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dankombo Morris, has ordered a full investigation into the case and directed that the suspect be prosecuted at the conclusion of the inquiry.
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, the police warned that the Command would not tolerate any form of cyber harassment, sextortion, or online impersonation. He urged individuals engaging in such criminal acts to stop immediately or be ready to face legal consequences.
The Command also advised members of the public — especially women — to be cautious when sharing personal photos or information online, and to avoid engaging with strangers who make suspicious or inappropriate requests.
Police reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the dignity, safety, and digital rights of all residents. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious online behavior or cases of blackmail to law enforcement authorities without delay.
