Adamawa Targets 1 Million Children in Statewide Vaccination Campaign
The Adamawa State Government has unveiled plans to vaccinate over one million children aged 0–59 months as part of a major immunisation drive aimed at curbing the spread of childhood diseases.
The announcement was made at the first quarter meeting of the State Task Force on Primary Healthcare held in Yola. Speaking at the event, Deputy Governor Professor Kaletapwa Farauta said the meeting was convened to assess the state’s preparedness and improve coordination for key public health interventions.
She praised development partners and stakeholders for their continued contributions to strengthening primary healthcare services across the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and protecting residents’ wellbeing.
Farauta also confirmed that the state would fully support the upcoming Sub-National Immunization Plus Days (SNIPDs), scheduled to begin on March 28. She noted that the vaccination campaign had become necessary following reports of circulating variant poliovirus type 2 (cVPV2) in Gombi Local Government Area and neighbouring states.
The deputy governor urged parents, caregivers, and community leaders to cooperate with health authorities by ensuring all eligible children are vaccinated.
Expressing concern over a reported case of meningitis in Maiha Local Government Area, Farauta called for swift and coordinated action to prevent a potential outbreak.
She further revealed that preparations were ongoing for the integrated Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign and the distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs), both scheduled to commence in June 2026 across selected wards.
In addition, Farauta stressed the importance of strengthening disaster preparedness measures ahead of the rainy season to reduce the risk of flooding.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Chief Felix Tangwami, and the Executive Chairman of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Suleiman Saidu Bashir, said the quarterly meeting served as a platform to review health programmes, evaluate coverage, identify challenges, and develop strategies for improvement.
However, stakeholders highlighted insecurity as a significant obstacle to healthcare delivery, particularly in Lamurde and Hong Local Government Areas
